In an attempt to reclaim his sanity, he goes on a remote journey deep in the New Zealand forest, with a group of other mysterious trampers. But when a tramper dies, Stanley finds himself living out his worst nightmares, and faces the possibility that he himself might be exactly the kind of person he would normally write about.
