No character has ever been portrayed more often than Sherlock Holmes, and of all actors ever to play the role, Basil Rathbone is the iconic Sherlock Holmes. Opposite Holmes, Nigel Bruce was cast as Dr. Watson and lent Watson a naïve yet loyal quality. Collected here, in order, are all 14 of their performances as the most famous detective team of all.
Rathbone’s first role as the world-famous sleuth was in Hound of the Baskervilles, followed by The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, both for Fox studios. In 1942 Universal began production of their Sherlock Holmes series, now modernising Holmes from Victorian setting to wartime London. Over the next four years, Universal would make a total of 12 films, each of them classics today.
Roy William Neill was the director and the creative genius behind all but the first film of the Universal series. Despite their limited budgets and serial nature, these films are atmospheric and surprisingly inventive. However, it is the intelligence and passion both Rathbone and Bruce endow their characters that ensure the place of these films as treasures of cinema.
These Universal films were the object of a 10-year restoration project by the UCLA Film and Television Archive and are here presented fully restored for the first time in New Zealand
