Legendary filmmaker and visual effects pioneer Douglass Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey) made his landmark directorial debut with this 1971 eco-themed sci-fi classic. Later creating the effects for Blade Runner and Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third King, Trumball's directing debut also utilized pioneering effects on a tiny budget. Bruce Dern (The Great Gatsby) stars as a nature-loving crewmember of the Valley Forge, a gigantic spaceship that carries Earth's last surviving forests, fallen victim to ecological destruction.
When orders come from eath to destroy the domes, Dern vows to save the forests by sending them into deep space. Spending the remainder of his mission with three robotic drones as his only companions, this eco-saviour struggles to maintain his sanity in the vastness of space. Dern is superb in a memorable role, while Joan Baez sings the classic hippy-generation theme song.
