Opening sequences suggest a fantasy future of civil wars, but the narrative soon alters to a world in which animals talk, and surrealism rules.
The photography is by Bergman’s magnificent lensman, Sven Nykvist, and Andy Warhol star, Joe Dallesandro also features in the cast. An oddity to be sure, but essential viewing for all Malle fans.
