12 year old Zazie arrives in Paris with her mother on the morning train. But her mother has a date with her lover, so Zazie is ferried off to her uncle’s house. Thus begins a madcap romp in which Zazie, and the viewer’s, world turns upside down, and inside out. Malle celebrates the people of Paris, and the character of the city itself with passion, and a nod to surrealism, and a host of other –isms.

There is positively gleeful and manic energy about the film (based on a novel by Raymond Queneau), quite unique in Malle’s catalogue. The stunts atop the Eiffel Tower are audacious; the actors seem swept away in the stream of amazing events!

Catherine Demongeot is quite stunning as Zazie, and Philippe Noiret is superb in the unforgettable role of Uncle Gabriel.
