'WARU' WINS GRAND PRIZE AT THE WAIROA MAORI FILM FESTIVAL

'Waru' took home the Mana Wairoa Grand Prize for Advancement of Indigenous Rights from the Wairoa Maori Film Festival.

The 2018 Mana Wairoa Film Festival took place over the long weekend and 'Waru' won the Mana Wairoa Grand Prize for Advancement of Indigenous Rights. The Mana Wairoa Grand Prize was presented by Wairoa Deputy Mayor Denise Eaglesome Karekare. She was assisted by students for Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Maungarongo in Wairoa.  

The Wairoa Maori Film Festival was founded in 2005 for the purpose of supporting, recognising and presenting the indigenous storyteller narrative.This years festival took place at the Kahungunu Marae in Nuhaka and featured some of the top indigenous films from the past year, guest speakers and performances by Te Rerenga Kotuku, BlakBoi and NRG Rising. Next year's festival will take place at the same location from May 31 to June 3 2019. The theme in 2019 will be "Maori Myths and Legends."
