Good Manners (As Boas Maneiras)

"Wholly captivating."
-Kat Hughes, The Hollywood News
From directing duo Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas comes the beastly fairy tale, Good Manners. The film follows Clara, a lonely nurse from the outskirts of São Paulo who is hired by mysterious and wealthy Ana as the nanny for her unborn child. Over time, as Clara develops sympathy for Ana, an attraction blossoms between the two women. Ana is afflicted by strange pains and cravings for bloody meat and nocturnal ramblings that coincide with the full moon. When she tells Clara about a one-night stand involving a mysterious stranger, a full moon and a strange creature, the true nature of what is gestating becomes apparent.

Speak Up ( A voix haute)
"It’ll hook you in from the beginning..."
-Billy Perrigo, The Panoptic
Every year there’s a breakout film at NZIFF that reminds us of the importance of being seen and heard, not least those of us who belong to minority groups. This year, that film is Speak Up, an inspiring documentary by french director Stéphane de Freitas. The film follows a group of French university students as they prepare for a public speaking competition, and, in doing so, tap into the liberating power of finding one’s own voice.
